A main objective of iL is to develop results which the research partners themselves are not using from demo products into prototypes and finally into marketable products. Such work is intended to be carried out in the category of “disruptive technology” especially, based on an untypical use of research findings. Disruptive technologies either address needs of the bottom market segment at extremely low costs or offer solutions for a group of customers that has not previously been addressed. In this context, however, iL will not be forming its own operative business, but either selling products which arise in this way to partners or starting separate spin-off companies. In particular, students of the University of Mannheim's Business School will work together with others trained in a scientific or technical discipline to create appropriate business models for innovative products while they are still under development. The first project of its kind, based on research results from Heidelberg University and concerned with the transcutaneous measurement of kidney function, was continued successfully in InnovationLab GmbH in 2008 and 2009 and after completion passed on in a different form to the Institute for Medical Technology at Heidelberg University and Hochschule Mannheim.
