The iL-Story

Since its foundation in 2008 by a strong group of like-minded shareholders, InnovationLab GmbH acts as the managing company of the research & development platform and the cluster Forum Organic Electronics (FOE). The German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) named the network the winner of their Leading-Edge Cluster Competition 2008.

On the initiative of Prof. Dr. Claus E. Heinrich, a former member of the executive board of SAP AG and former chairman of the board of the group Zukunft Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar (Future Metropolitan Region Rhine Neckar; ZMRN e.V.), the Academic Council of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region was set up in May 2007. The aim of this committee, with many outstanding members, is to drive the networking of science and business in the region forwards and to promote joint research activities.
In order to achieve these goals, the Academic Council has actively supported the foundation of InnovationLab GmbH and the successful entry of the Forum Organic Electronics cluster into the excellence cluster competition held by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.

The Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and surrounding areas are home to a large number of well-known companies, universities and research institutions focusing on the development of the future technology of organic electronics. In the past, those efforts have been primarily made either in the form of individual activities or bilateral cooperations. With the leading-edge cluster competition held by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) acting as a catalyst, the loosely connected participants from science and business have been successfully brought together into a close-knit research network, the Forum Organic Electronics. This targeted networking has led to the formation of a leading-edge cluster for organic electronics, whose depiction of the entire value chain gives it a globally unique selling point. Following the model of co-innovation, the partners' competencies are combined across disciplines. Joint research projects create decisive synergies which allow faster development of marketable products and applications. The partners' activities are guided by the collectively defined goals and a joint strategy.
