Smart Sensor Mats for Social Distance Control in Retail Stores

Unity in the fight against coronavirus: We have come up with an idea to utilize our sensor mats in order to automatically and anonymously maintain the important distance between customers in the retail sector. We are excited to put our idea into practice and look forward to your feedback regarding potential cooperations.

First Case: Automated Customer Counting System for Retail Stores

Keeping track of the number of customers currently in the store is proving difficult, especially in large stores which are full of nooks and crannies. The question which now arises is: How can we simply and efficiently regulate the number of customers in a shop in order to maintain the crucial social distance? Here is an idea:

  • Smart mats located at the entrances and exits of the stores allow an automated and anonymous real-time counting of customers inside
  • Centralized processing and storage of data by all mats
  • The intelligent sensor matrix inside the mat distinguishes between human steps and rolling carts

Second Case: Automated Distance Control at All Checkout Areas

Especially, in the checkout area of a retail store there is a high risk that the recommended distance is not maintained. Thus, we suggest to place smart sensor mats at the checkout to establish an automated system:

  • A single mat detects the steps of a customer
  • Subsequently, a green light located either at the conveyor belt or along the queue will signal for the next customer
  1. The intelligent sensor matrix inside the mat distinguishes between human steps and rolling carts

In this time of crisis we want to contribute and are currently looking for partners to put our ideas into practice. If you are the owner of a retail store or have any suggestions that can help us in the implementation of our proposal, feel free to contact us at CoronaSOS@innovationlab.de. We are looking forward to receiving your feedback or any further remarks - let us fight against the coronavirus together!
