Minimising Processing Time


A new burn-in oven has moved in! With this we can significantly optimize our processes while at the same time drying several substrates in the maximum format of the Thieme printing machine. The maximum temperature is 180°C, which is quite sufficient for most of our processes. Thus, our workflows are much faster and more reproducible.

InnovationLab at the BASF Firmencup


On May 25, we participated for the first time in the annual BASF Firmencup at the Hockenheimring. We ran the 4.8km course and obviously enjoyed this great team event. The weather was fantastic and it was well worth the aching muscles next day.

Printed electronics enables security features


In one of our projects with Kissel + Wolf GmbH, we are working with substrates on which conductive lines have been printed to support the detection of bore holes or "broken lines" on medicine packaging or luxury goods. With our Thieme printing machine, we can print on various substrates such as TPU, PEN and PET in the range of 50µm.

Uncompromising in performance and precision


iL is investing in the processing of its flexible print products. At the end of last year, the new digital cutter from Zünd Systemtechnik AG was installed by Systemservice Kühn in ourclean room and has now been put into operation following staff training. It sets new standards and is precisely tailored to the needs for further processing of printed electro-nics.

We are making great progress in printing fine structures via R2R printing, that will be able to challenge photolitographic structures in the future. One of the substantial advantages of this additive manufacturing is the use of less chemical processes while maintaining endless processability, enabling costeffective printing due to the usage of ecofriendly sleeves.

Hybrid integration made possible by printed electronics


Within the BMBF-project 2HORISONS, we are working on a hybrid integration in which silicon chips are to be placed directly on the conductor tracks of the printed films. This technology enables a partial integration of a classic PCB and part of the peripheral elec-tronics to be integrated directly into the printed sensor, reducing the number of connec-tions by 80%.

Our new R&D inkjet printer in desktop format by SÜSS MicroTec is used for functional printing applications. It is specifically designed for research applications and for the evaluation and development of inkjet materials. Our smart carpet has arrived at Henkel! Using their force sensing ink technology, the device can detect pressure when someone is standing or walking over it. This smart surface solution allows for non-optical crowd analytics using our specialized software with artificia lintelligence.

Replacement of our Nitrogen System at Hall L


Recently there has been a lot going on in and around our Hall L and some improve-ments have been made by our team. Most recently, our old nitrogen system had to be replaced by a larger one, as this was needed for a cooperation with one of our partners for process development for film coating.

Keeping cool at all times - Our new air-cooled chiller


A few weeks ago we installed our new air-cooled chiller of the brand Swegon Germany GmbH which has a cooling capacity of 110KW. This enables a pleasant working environment of 23°C in our hall L as well as in the cleanrooms – even during the hot summer months.

We are proud that Florian Ullrich had the opportunity to present our printed sensor solutions together with SAP at DKOM in Karlsruhe in front of more than 10,000 attendees. World record inkjet printed perovskite solar cells with an efficiency of 18,5%


Scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology develop a new coating process to manufacture perovskite solar cells by large-scale inkjet printing. KIT and InnovationLab reach 18,5% record efficiency of this process. In the next step the process may jump from laboratory scale to industrial scale.

We are right in the middle of another industrial sensor production for Dr. Jean Bausch's Occlusion Control System. The first part of more than 100.000 flexible printed pressure sensors in different sizes are nearly done and we are waiting for the next run of 300.000 sensors in autumn and winter.

InnovationLab printed its flexible pressure sensors with long-term partner Thieme on 1.1m x 2.1m foil to test the next level of large-scale printing. The printed pressure sensors are manufactured using a high throughput printing process. Such an additive manufacturing approach enables cost effective fabrication of large-area sensor arrays.

Partner News: Researchers use a synthetic 'tongue' to sort out whiskies


In the journal Chem on June 8, researchers from Germany's Heidelberg University, led by Uwe Bunz, introduce an artificial sensor array or "tongue" that can detect whether two nearly identical whisky samples are a match. The sensor arrays can also identify some of the whiskies' key qualities, such as malt status, age, and country of origin.
